I ended up getting the lm317t anyway.

I was just joking hahahha. I have no idea what computer chips even are. The first word that came to mind when I saw T was trachea. Like in your respiratory system.

I can't really tell you what the differences between any random IC chips are off the top of my head, there are millions. The best I could tell you is to read the datasheets and figure out which one works best for your usage.
